Privacy policy

What The Local Voice saves, what stays on your device, and who else may see it when you use the site.

Information you share

You can use the site without signing up. If you ask for email updates, we save your email, city, language, and the topics, district, or decisions you picked. If you ask us to cover a new city, we save the city name and your email if you give one, and we tell the person who runs the site. If you report a mistake, we save your note, the page or decision, the city, and your language. Please don't put private personal details in a report. A reviewer may post a separate public correction.

Finding your district

When you look up your district, we send your address to the U.S. Census Bureau's free address tool. It finds the spot on a map, and we compare that spot to the City's official district map. We don't save your street address in our records. The Census tool and other services may keep a record of your request. Your browser can remember the district you picked. Voter lookup sites we link to have their own privacy rules.

Messages and participation

Your email draft, including anything personal you add, is put together in your browser. We don't save it in our records or send it to an AI service. When you click an email button, the draft opens in the email service you chose, and you decide whether to send it. Council offices may treat the emails they get as public records. When you answer a poll or tell us you sent an email, we save a random code for your device, the decision, your answer if there is one, and your district if you gave it. We don't save your name, email, or street address for this. Email counts come from visitors who say they sent an email. We can't confirm delivery.

Browser storage and visits

Some things are saved only on your device, in your browser: your language, district, the decisions you follow, your poll and email choices, and your place in the list. Our hosting company gives us visit reports: how many visits, which pages, which sites sent people here, device types, and rough locations. These reports don't show names. Hosting companies may use IP addresses (the number your internet connection uses) and request records to run and protect the site. Google Fonts gets a request when the site's fonts load.

Services we use

We use this information to send the updates you asked for, remember your choices, fix mistakes, understand visits, and stop misuse. The companies that host the site, store its records, and send its emails handle the information they need to do that. Confirmation and alert emails are sent through Lovable's email service. Once our newsletter service, beehiiv, is connected, confirmed digest signups may be shared with it. Email companies may keep a record of what was delivered. We may share information if the law requires it. Outside services follow their own rules.

Your choices and retention

You have to confirm your email before any updates start. Vote alerts are separate from the weekly digest. To stop updates, use the unsubscribe link in any of our update emails. We may keep a note that you unsubscribed so we don't email you again. Clearing this site's data in your browser resets the choices saved on your device. It doesn't delete records we saved. On a decision page, you can undo telling us you sent an email, or clear a poll answer, as long as you use the same device and browser. Other saved records are not deleted on a set schedule. We'll add a public contact here for privacy questions and deletion requests.

Policy updates

We will update this page and its date if our practices change. No online service can guarantee complete security.
